More like Idle America. I pray that I am never so without anything to do that I actually watch it. what I have seen, I don't like and I like country music. Facebook needs a dislike button, especially for the Factoids in the upper right hand corner of my Home page. I don't know who writes the many who like this like...
Somebody is reading their statistics backwards. Many people that like country music like camping. OK, Valid. Many people that like Country music like football. Yeah. And many non-music lovers, and many Country Music lovers who never even heard of Facebook. Many who like country music like American Idol., I don't buy it. There a large number of idiots in any defined population segment and to link an appreciation for an artform with a TV timefiller that costs next to nothing to produce and that garnered a juicy time slot because better programming's inability to compete at the bottom line. Place a program that has $0 production cost up against a high budget documentary or a movie with a star or two that insist on being paid what they are worth and guess what. The winner is..... the content that has the highest revenue to production cost ratio. Not the content that doesn't fall below the lowest common denominator. not the content that has enough substance to generate a residual revenue stream rather than relying on first run advertising and simultaneous syndication fees since the Idol programming has the shelflife of chiffon, the lifespan of todays obituary page. Take the money and run, Rules! at least at Fox. Programming director Bart Simpson came up with a winning formulation for the beancounters. Stick the cheapest programming you can find and spread the content across as many primetime hours and as many days in a single week. Put it in front of as many default eyes as you can and hypnotize the flock. Make them believe that, because It airs more than one evening this week with a summation on the weekend it must be important and therefore a Must See.
Mr. Statistician Man, don't blame country music fans for American Idol. How about: Americans with sub-human intelligence or IQ's less than 75 like American Idol or LIKE Country music and LIKE the Facebook "LIKE" button.
BERT Sez : More LIKEly Idol or Idle fans lack the skills to navigate channel changing with a remote control and are clueless that another way exists to change channels, control volume or in extremis that a on off physical switch even exists somewhere on their television set. It is entirely possible that this selfsame cohort does not understand the damage to the aggregated result or the implications of publicly advocating or registering such a simple opinion has in more places than just Faceook. Liikes are available across the entire web. Glue accesses my likes and aggregates them with my friends and friends of friends and presents me with related material to Like or dislike or save for later. It also pimps me off as as knowledgeable arbiter of artistic approval or a societal arbiter of artistic endeavor. And people fall for that scam all the time. Rate a couple of tracks and and all of a sudden you are a guru with subscribers following you around waiting for more brain droppings. The culturally stunted yearn for guidance to substantive content. To most, opinion is as valid as technical criticism. Its why Siskel and Ebert were so successful, they explained literal and technical positives in their reviews and then encapsulated their impression with a thumbs up or on. I am not convinced that our shaved ape sub segment of the primetime television viewing population understands anything more about the remote or in this case the like button beyond the obvious change in the screen when you push it. Nor am I convinced that they know what American Idol is. Its just what came on when they pushed the button. Mama always tol' me television will rot your brain. I think Idol fans are a perfect example. Once hypnotized the misguided souls lose the ability to reason or realize that they now believe the hype. They cannot unlike the show, they don't know they know that they should. Idol nothing more than a reiteration of the Ted Mack Amateur Hour but without the talent of Wayne Newton. Don't blame Country music for American Idol's success.
